How the Island was Formed
A long time ago, on the border of the North American Plate and the Eurasian plate, an under water volcano ruptured with a lot of violence. Then all the lava hit the bottom and cooled but after hundreds of years of rupturing the lava started to build up, forming a volcanic island. As soon as the build up of lava hit the surface it kept going for 50ft above sea level. As the tectonic plates shifted, other mountains started to form on the East side of the island. The volcano became inactive from the tectonic plate closing up the gap. This is how our island was formed.

Reaction Plan to Earthquakes
Because of our location on the tectonic plates it is very likely that we will have an earthquake. At the beginning of the year you will get a hand out in the mail that states the following. If you hear a loud beeping sound coming from the speakers that means there will be an earthquake . There are eight speakers in every city. There are different to secure your houses for our earthquakes. Everything on the walls has to be bolted on - boilers, heaters, water softeners, shelves etc. The house beams have to be re-enforced and we have inspectors to check everything. When you hear the speakers get out of the house and run for one of the city shelters. Then after the earthquakes happen our Earthquake Safety Crew comes around to help anyone who is hurt.

How Will Our Island Affect Your Daily Life
The land is very flat if you stay by the cites, but as you get closer to the east side of the island it's rougher and steeper terrain. On the south side of the mountains there's trail and you are able to live up there if you really wanted to but it's a lot harder to find food and be comfortable. Our soils are very rich because our island was created by a volcano so growing crops is fairly easy. The soil has a lot of minerals in it already so we don't need to put a lot of extra minerals in to it.
Our Soils
Our top two layers of soul are sand and rich, nutrient-filled soil. The bottom soil is clay. To keep our soils that we plant on rich we put a layer of compost on it every month.
